Our Whole30 In N Out Burgers: Double Double Animal Style recipe continues to be a phenomenal reader favorite, consistently driving engagement and demonstrating the power of evergreen content.
February 2018 emerged as a period of profound introspection and anticipation, a month largely defined by the question: “What comes next?” Following an extraordinary, yet somewhat predictable, surge in traffic during January’s New Year’s resolution season, the subsequent trajectory of our site’s metrics became a focal point of intense observation. Despite my somewhat obsessive monitoring of daily traffic, an astonishing pattern emerged: our earnings in February remained remarkably consistent with those of January. When accounting for the inherent difference in the number of days each month holds, our average daily income remained almost identical. For instance, in January 2018, our site generated an impressive average of $544 per day; in February, this figure held steady at an average of $540 per day. This consistency, even with fewer days and fluctuating traffic, underscored a robust underlying monetization strategy.
It’s important to note that while the daily income remained stable, the nature of the work contributing to it shifted significantly in February. A larger portion of my time was dedicated to hands-on, direct client engagement. This included fulfilling freelance recipe development contracts and providing intensive one-on-one coaching for aspiring food bloggers and food photographers. The realization that income levels could be maintained through a diversified approach, blending passive ad revenue with active service provision, was genuinely shocking and incredibly validating even as I reflect on these numbers today.
Speaking of numbers and the fascinating story they tell…
Traffic & Audience Engagement: February 2018 Deep Dive
As detailed in our previous income report, January witnessed an unprecedented surge in our traffic, directly correlating with the New Year’s resolution period—a prime time for health-focused content. What truly stood out was that this elevated traffic level wasn’t fleeting; it sustained throughout February, remaining consistently double what our average monthly traffic was prior to January. Now, as we navigate towards the midpoint of Q2, this sustained elevation delivers a crucial message, particularly for niche health food bloggers: the strategic importance of “owning January” cannot be overstated. This involves meticulous content planning, SEO optimization around popular health trends, and proactive promotional campaigns to capitalize on seasonal user intent. We plan to dedicate a more comprehensive article to this specific strategy in the near future, as it holds immense potential for annual growth.
The overarching takeaway from this period is that the significant bump in exposure garnered in January created a powerful springboard, allowing us to maintain a higher baseline traffic level moving forward. This sustained momentum is not taken for granted. We are actively and diligently exploring new strategies every day to proactively counter known seasonal slumps and typical blogging challenges. Our focus remains on creating evergreen content, diversifying our traffic sources, and continuously optimizing user experience. The effectiveness of these ongoing efforts will undoubtedly shape our future growth trajectory.
To provide a clearer perspective on our performance, here’s a direct comparison of February 2018’s traffic against the last 28 days of January 2018. While a natural dip is expected due to the shorter month and the initial New Year’s resolution peak tapering off, the sheer fact that our traffic remained at a level precisely double our average for the entirety of 2017 filled us with immense excitement and reinforced our growth strategies.

And for an even more striking illustration of our progress, observe February 2018’s traffic statistics compared directly to February 2017. The growth evident here is truly remarkable, reflecting a year of dedicated effort and strategic implementation. Whoa indeed!

Total Pageviews for February 2018: 584,411 (It is important to remember this figure represents 28 days of activity, not a standard 30 or 31-day month, making the achievement even more significant).
Diverse Income Streams: Monetizing Our Food Blog
In this section, we provide a transparent overview of our revenue generation for February 2018. It’s crucial to clarify that this report exclusively includes income streams directly related to, or significantly influenced by, my food blog and broader online presence. For instance, while I engaged in a year-end campaign for a non-profit client this month, and my blog likely played a role in securing that opportunity, it’s not a direct blog monetization channel, and thus excluded. Conversely, income derived from freelance food photography is a direct result of the portfolio showcased and visibility gained through my online platform, making it a legitimate inclusion.
February was particularly active with a few exciting additional projects. I had the pleasure of developing new recipes for Soli, a local brand – for those in the Memphis area, you can actually order my creations ready-made! Furthermore, I officially launched one-on-one coaching services for food bloggers and photographers, marking a new chapter in direct mentorship.
- Sponsored Posts: $1,000. This month’s sponsored content included the creation of one recipe for a long-standing client, demonstrating the value of cultivating strong, repeat partnerships. Additionally, an Instagram video campaign contributed to this revenue, highlighting the importance of diversified content formats for brand collaborations. Securing sponsored posts often relies on a strong media kit, consistent engagement, and a clear understanding of your audience’s demographics and interests.
- Ad Revenue with AdThrive: $8,611.87. Our revenue per thousand impressions (RPM) for February saw a significant boost, reaching $14.74, a notable increase from January’s RPM of approximately $12. This improvement can be attributed to factors such as optimized ad placements, higher-quality traffic, and potentially favorable ad market conditions during the month. While the total ad revenue appears lower than usual at first glance, it’s essential to remember this figure is for a 28-day month. Projecting an average daily earning of $307.57 (which consistently highlights our strong monetization capabilities), a standard 30-day month would have yielded approximately $9,227, aligning closely with our current average ad revenue figures. Consistent, high-quality content and a fast-loading site are crucial for maximizing ad earnings.
- Freelance Food Photography: None. While this is a significant income stream in many months, February was focused on other direct client work. Building a strong portfolio through your blog is key to attracting these opportunities.
- Freelance Recipe Development: $3,000. Having worked as a freelance recipe developer for several years, I find immense satisfaction in collaborating with brands to craft unique dishes that perfectly align with their business and marketing objectives. It’s a dynamic and creatively stimulating field where, quite literally, eating for work is part of the job description. This month, these bespoke culinary creations generated $3,000 in revenue. Developing strong relationships with brands and showcasing your unique recipe development style on your blog are vital for success in this area.
- Food Blog & Photography Coaching: $1,500. February marked the official launch of my one-on-one coaching program, catering to a diverse group of food bloggers, from nascent beginners to those eager to refine their craft. My signature offering is an in-depth brand development analysis, coupled with a thorough panel of actionable growth suggestions customized for each client. Clients enrolled in the program receive exclusive access to my comprehensive food photography resources, including my acclaimed food photography book and specialized Lightroom presets. Each week, we engage in close, iterative critiques of their most recent photography, review their SEO efforts for maximum visibility, and meticulously refine their copywriting for enhanced reader engagement. Together, we brainstorm innovative content ideas, conduct deep dives into their analytics to uncover growth opportunities, and troubleshoot social media strategies for optimal reach. In essence, it is an extremely intensive, hands-on program meticulously designed for any blogger dedicated to leveling up their skills and approaching their craft with serious intent. If this sounds like the transformative support you’re seeking to accelerate your blogging journey, I highly recommend reaching out to learn more and see if our program is the right fit for you.
- Sales (Digital Products): $415. This revenue stream encompasses sales from all proprietary digital products available on our site. This includes popular offerings like our digital cookbook, The Paleo Instant Pot, alongside our curated food photography presets, and the highly practical ebook, Improve Your Food Photography Almost Instantly. Creating and promoting your own digital products is an excellent way to diversify income and provide direct value to your audience.
- Amazon Affiliate Sales: $606.17. This income represents commissions earned when our readers make purchases through the Amazon links provided on our site. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement: our readers incur no additional cost for their purchases, while we receive a small percentage of the sale as a referral fee for directing them to relevant products. Strategic placement of affiliate links, along with honest and helpful recommendations, significantly contributes to this income stream.

Essential Expenses: Investing in Our Food Blog’s Growth
Running a successful food blog, much like any other business, requires strategic investments in essential tools and services. These expenses are not merely costs; they are critical enablers that ensure our site operates efficiently, remains secure, and continues to grow. Here’s a breakdown of our key expenditures for February 2018:
- WPOpt: $43. Our hosting provider, WPOpt, is an absolute cornerstone of our operation. Their service ensures our site loads incredibly fast, which is paramount for user experience and a critical factor for SEO rankings. Furthermore, they seamlessly include an HTTPS certificate, eliminating potential headaches associated with site security. WPOpt offers various tiered plans to accommodate different traffic volumes, making them suitable for bloggers at any stage. While our traffic continues to climb, I feel WPOpt still manages our current volume exceptionally well at our chosen plan level, though an upgrade may soon be warranted. I wholeheartedly recommend their robust and reliable hosting services.
- MailerLite: $95. Our email list is an indispensable asset, serving as one of our most potent drivers of direct traffic and audience engagement. This strategic focus has led to substantial list growth. We rely on MailerLite for our email marketing needs because it reliably handles all essential functionalities without unnecessary complexities. This month, our subscription cost increased by $30, a positive indicator reflecting our achievement of 25,000 subscribers – a significant milestone in audience building. A well-maintained email list allows for direct communication with your most dedicated followers, offering exclusive content and promotions.
- Adobe Creative Cloud: $50. As a content creator deeply involved in various visual and design aspects, a subscription to the entire suite of Adobe applications is indispensable. My work frequently involves design, photography, and videography. For the blog alone, I extensively utilize Premiere Pro for video editing, Lightroom for photo cataloging and editing, Photoshop for advanced image manipulation, and Adobe Illustrator for graphic design elements. The $50/month package represents exceptional value for the breadth of professional tools it provides.
- LinkMyPhotos: $5. This service plays a crucial role in bridging our Instagram presence with our blog. It enables us to create clickable links directly from our Instagram photos to specific blog posts, driving engaged social media users directly to our content. While many popular bloggers opt for LinkInProfile, LinkMyPhotos offers identical functionality at half the cost, proving to be a highly efficient and cost-effective solution for social media integration.
- Food Blogger Virtual Assistant: $600. The decision to bring on a virtual assistant has been, without a doubt, one of the most transformative investments in my business. My assistant provides invaluable support across a multitude of tasks, from sourcing relevant social media links to share, to assisting with photo and video shoots, and managing countless other administrative and content-related duties. Her contributions have made the single biggest difference in expanding my operational capacity and, consequently, my earning potential. I firmly believe that every serious blogger or entrepreneur can significantly benefit from the strategic delegation a virtual assistant provides. We’ll delve further into the profound impact of this partnership in the subsequent sections.

The Unseen Value: The Power of Putting Yourself Out There
As we conclude this income report, particularly since including freelance food photography and recipe development, it feels imperative to expand on a concept I believe is the bedrock of any blogger’s success: the sheer, undeniable power of actively “putting yourself out there.”
It’s a common misconception that a blog only starts generating significant income once it achieves massive ad revenue or becomes a household name. However, even during the nascent stages when my blog was relatively “small” and not yet commanding substantial ad earnings, it was already contributing an astonishing amount to my overall income—hundreds of thousands of dollars, in fact, over time! How was this seemingly paradoxical achievement possible?
The answer is elegantly simple: my blog served as an unparalleled visibility engine from its earliest days. It acted as my digital storefront, my public portfolio, and my professional resume, all rolled into one. It signaled to potential clients and collaborators: “Hey, she’s present in this space. Hey, she possesses undeniable photography skills. Hey, her writing is engaging and clear. Hey… I wonder if she’s the creative mind behind her site’s design?” This continuous, public display of my capabilities wasn’t just about sharing recipes; it was about broadcasting my expertise, passion, and potential.
This early visibility directly translated into tangible opportunities. It consistently led to unsolicited job offers, opened doors to new client relationships, and, crucially, secured numerous freelance food photography and recipe development contracts with major brands – opportunities that materialized years ago, long before substantial ad revenue became a reality. It’s no exaggeration to say that my blog was directly responsible for driving 75% or even more of the client projects I undertook as a full-time freelancer. In essence, my entire freelance career, and the financial freedom it provided, was a direct consequence of simply putting myself out there.
Yet, as bloggers and creatives, we often find ourselves paralyzed by comparison. We scroll through Instagram feeds brimming with breathtaking photos from peers in our niche, read impeccably crafted articles, and witness seemingly effortless successes. This constant exposure to perceived perfection can be deeply demotivating. It cultivates an insidious temptation to hoard our content, waiting “until it’s truly ready,” or, more accurately, forever. We tell ourselves we need one more course, one more piece of expensive equipment, one more week of practice before our work is worthy of public consumption.
I am here, unequivocally, to urge you to dismantle that mental barrier. Just do it. Let it go. Put your work out there, even if it feels imperfect. Do not defer your dreams until you attain James Beard-worthy recipe developer status or capture photos deserving of a spot in the Museum of Modern Art. Start now. Launch that blog post, share that recipe, publish that photo, even if you see flaws. Use that public space as your growth laboratory. It is through doing, through receiving feedback, through continuous iteration, that true mastery is forged. The act of sharing initiates a feedback loop, driving improvement and building resilience. Do it now.
And if you’re eager to accelerate the development of your skills and refine your craft whilst actively engaging with the world and putting your work out there, my food blogging and photography coaching program might be the perfect catalyst for your journey. We provide the structured guidance, expert critique, and unwavering support you need to confidently push past perfectionism and truly thrive.
