Why These Crockpot Chicken Wings Are an Absolute Game-Changer
Preparing chicken wings can sometimes feel like a labor-intensive task, but not with this slow cooker recipe. We’ve streamlined the process to deliver an unparalleled flavor and texture experience with minimal effort. Here’s what makes these Crockpot chicken wings truly exceptional:
- Unbelievably Tender & Juicy: The slow cooking process allows the chicken to gently simmer in its flavorful sauce, breaking down the connective tissues and rendering the fat. The result is fall-off-the-bone tenderness and incredible juiciness that’s simply unmatched by other cooking methods. Each bite is succulent and packed with flavor, thanks to the extended cooking time.
- Effortlessly Easy “Dump and Go” Preparation: This recipe is designed for convenience. Most of the work involves simply seasoning the wings, adding them to your Crockpot, and pouring over the delicious sauce. It’s a true “set it and forget it” meal, perfect for busy weeknights, meal prep, or when you’re entertaining and want to minimize kitchen time.
- Achieve Restaurant-Quality Crispiness Without Frying: A common misconception about slow-cooked wings is that they won’t be crispy. Our secret lies in a quick broiling step at the end. After slow cooking, the wings are transferred to a baking sheet and broiled for a few minutes. This magical step transforms the skin into a wonderfully crispy, golden-brown exterior while maintaining the succulent interior, giving you the best of both worlds without the mess or extra oil of deep-frying.
- Easily Adaptable for Dietary Needs: This versatile recipe can be effortlessly adjusted to fit various dietary preferences. For those following a Paleo or Whole30 lifestyle, simply substitute butter with ghee and ensure your hot sauce is compliant. Serve them with our Whole30-compliant Dump Ranch dressing for a complete and delicious meal that adheres to your health goals.
- Perfect for Any Occasion: Whether it’s a casual weeknight dinner, a lively tailgating party, a festive holiday gathering, or a potluck with friends, these chicken wings are always a hit. Their ease of preparation makes them ideal for feeding a crowd, allowing you more time to enjoy the company rather than being stuck in the kitchen. They serve beautifully as an appetizer or can be scaled up to be the star of your main course.

Instant Pot Adaptation: Speed Up Your Wing Game
Don’t have a Crockpot? No problem! You can achieve equally delicious, tender, and crispy chicken wings using your Instant Pot. This method significantly cuts down on cooking time, making it perfect for last-minute cravings or when you’re short on time. Here’s how to convert this recipe for your Instant Pot:
- Prepare the Wings: Place your chicken wings in the bottom of the Instant Pot. Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of your preferred hot sauce. Secure the lid, making sure the valve is in the “Sealing” position.
- Pressure Cook: Cook the wings on Manual High Pressure for 10 minutes. Once the cooking cycle is complete, perform a Quick Release to depressurize the pot.
- Craft the Buffalo Sauce: While the wings are cooking, prepare your buffalo sauce. In a separate bowl or saucepan, combine the remaining hot sauce, butter (or ghee for Whole30/Paleo), onion powder, and garlic powder. Whisk until thoroughly combined and smooth. If using a saucepan, gently heat on low to melt the butter; if microwaving, heat in 30-second intervals until melted.
- Prepare for Broiling: Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy cleanup, then place a wire rack on top. Lightly spray the wire rack with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Preheat your oven broiler to high, positioning the oven rack about 6 inches from the broiler element.
- Transfer and Broil: Carefully remove the cooked wings from the Instant Pot using tongs and arrange them in a single layer on the prepared wire rack. Broil for 5 minutes, then flip the wings and broil for another 5 minutes, or until they start to develop a nice golden crisp.
- Sauce and Finish: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Using a pastry brush, generously baste the broiled wings with the buffalo sauce you prepared earlier. Return them to the broiler for another 3-5 minutes, basting again halfway through. Flip and repeat on the other side, basting, broiling, and basting again after about 1.5 to 2 minutes.
- Monitor Closely: Keep a very close eye on the wings during the broiling process, as they can burn quickly. They are done when they are beautifully crispy and browned in spots, but not overly charred. Avoid over-broiling to prevent them from drying out.
Can These Delicious Wings Be Prepared in Advance?
While these chicken wings are truly at their best when served immediately after broiling to enjoy their ultimate crispiness, there are ways to manage if you need to prepare them slightly ahead of time. The slow cooking part can be done in advance, but the final broiling step is crucial for texture.
For optimal crispness, we highly recommend serving these wings freshly made. The broiler step creates that desirable crunchy skin, which can soften over time if left sitting. However, if you anticipate a delay before serving, you can keep the slow-cooked wings warm in the Crockpot on the “Warm” setting for a short period. This keeps them tender but won’t maintain the crisp exterior.
If you need to make them entirely ahead, you can slow cook the wings and prepare the sauce. Store the cooked wings and sauce separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When ready to serve, reheat the wings in the oven or air fryer until warmed through, then proceed with the broiling step as described to crisp them up, and toss with the warmed sauce. This approach allows for some meal prep while still delivering a delicious final product.
Chef’s Expert Tips for Perfect Crockpot Chicken Wings
To ensure your Crockpot chicken wings turn out perfectly tender, flavorful, and crispy every time, here are some invaluable tips from the kitchen:
- Choose Quality Chicken: Whenever possible, opt for organic chicken wings that have been raised without antibiotics. High-quality chicken makes a noticeable difference in flavor and texture, contributing to a richer, more satisfying dish. Look for wings that are plump and have good skin coverage.
- Don’t Skimp on Seasoning: Before adding your wings to the Crockpot, liberally season them with salt. This foundational seasoning is key to drawing out the chicken’s natural flavors and ensures that every bite is well-seasoned from the inside out. Don’t be shy – a good amount of salt is essential for flavor development.
- Master the Broiler: The broiling step is quick but powerful. Keep a vigilant eye on the wings while they are under the broiler, as they can go from perfectly golden to burnt in a matter of seconds. Different ovens and broilers vary in intensity, so stand by and check frequently, flipping as needed, until they reach your desired level of crispiness and browning.
- Serving Suggestions: Elevate your wing experience with classic accompaniments. Serve your hot and crispy wings with a cooling blue cheese or ranch dip. The creamy, tangy dip provides a wonderful contrast to the spicy wings. Fresh, crisp celery sticks and carrot sticks are also excellent choices, offering a refreshing crunch and a natural palate cleanser between bites.
- Pat Wings Dry: For an even crispier finish, pat the chicken wings very dry with paper towels before seasoning and placing them in the slow cooker. Removing excess moisture helps the skin render more effectively during slow cooking and crisps up better under the broiler.
- Vary Your Hot Sauce: The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability. Experiment with different brands and types of hot sauce to find your favorite flavor profile. From mild to extra hot, sweet to smoky, the choice of hot sauce can dramatically alter the taste, allowing you to customize the wings to your preference.

These chicken wings are incredibly tender, perfectly spicy, and utterly delicious. Made in the Crockpot or slow cooker, they offer super easy preparation, making them ideal as an appetizer or a main course for tailgating season, holidays, or any party!
Yields: 6 servings
Equipment
- Large bowl (or plate, or cutting board)
- Crockpot (or slow cooker)
- Medium saucepan (or microwave-safe bowl)
- Stovetop (or microwave)
- Whisk
- Internal meat thermometer
- Broiler
- Large baking sheet
- Tongs
- Wire baking rack (optional, for crispier wings)
Ingredients
For the Chicken Wings
- 4 pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken wings, separated into drums and flats
- Salt, to taste
- 8 ounces hot sauce of choice (for coating after broiling)
For the Buffalo Sauce
- ½ cup butter (or ghee, sliced into small cubes)
- 4 ounces hot sauce of choice (for slow cooking)
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Serving Suggestions (All Optional)
- Blue cheese dressing or ranch dressing
- Celery sticks
- Carrot sticks
Instructions
- Liberally season 4 pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken wings with salt on all sides. Place the seasoned wings in your slow cooker.
- In a medium saucepan, combine ½ cup butter (or ghee), 4 ounces hot sauce, 1 teaspoon onion powder, and 1 teaspoon garlic powder. Place the saucepan on the stovetop over low heat and whisk continuously until the butter is melted and all ingredients are fully incorporated into a smooth sauce.
- Once the sauce is smooth, pour it evenly over the salted chicken wings in the slow cooker. Toss the wings gently to ensure they are completely coated in the sauce. Secure the lid on your Crockpot.
- Cook the wings on HIGH for 2 hours or on LOW for 4 hours, or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 160° Fahrenheit when measured with an internal meat thermometer.
- Preheat your broiler to HIGH. While the broiler preheats, carefully transfer the cooked wings from the slow cooker to a large baking sheet, arranging them in a single, even layer. For extra crispy wings, place a wire baking rack on the baking sheet first, then arrange the wings on top of the rack.
- Place the baking sheet directly beneath the preheated broiler. Broil the wings for 5 minutes. Then, using tongs, carefully flip each wing over and broil for another 5 minutes on the other side. Continue to broil until the wings are crispy and nicely browned in spots on both sides.
- While the wings are broiling, discard any remaining liquid from the Crockpot. Once the wings are ready, return the broiled wings to the empty Crockpot. Add the remaining 8 ounces of hot sauce (your choice) to the Crockpot. Toss the wings thoroughly to coat them in the fresh sauce. Set the slow cooker to LOW and cook, uncovered, for an additional 5 minutes or until the sauce is absorbed and beautifully clinging to the wings.
- Transfer the finished wings to a serving platter or individual plates. Serve warm with your preferred blue cheese dressing or ranch dip, alongside crisp celery sticks and carrot sticks, if desired.
Notes
- Make it Whole30: To adapt this recipe for Whole30, ensure you use ghee instead of butter and select a hot sauce that is compliant with Whole30 guidelines (check ingredients for added sugars or undesirable additives). Serve with a Whole30-compliant ranch dressing.
