January: The Health Food Blogger’s Season of Triumph
While many food bloggers revel in the lucrative “comfort food quarter” of October through December, often boasting about high RPMs from holiday-themed recipes, January tells a different story. For health food bloggers, this month is our undeniable moment to shine. It’s when the world embraces New Year’s resolutions, Whole30 challenges, Veganuary commitments, and a collective desire for healthier living. We affectionately call it Health Food Domination Takeover Monopoly Blogger January – a period where our specialized content perfectly aligns with immense reader demand.
Despite the predictable dip in RPMs (revenue per thousand impressions) that typically follows the holiday advertising frenzy, the sheer volume of traffic we commanded in January more than compensated. Our strategic focus on healthy, accessible recipes positioned us perfectly to capture this post-holiday surge, proving that smart content planning can overcome seasonal fluctuations in ad rates.

Those Whole30 chilaquiles (made with sweet potatoes), truly a star!
Unprecedented Traffic Growth: Over 1 Million Pageviews!
A Remarkable Start to 2018
January 2018 marked my first truly significant January since committing fully to the health food niche. While January 2017 showed promising signs of increased traffic, nothing prepared me for the incredible explosion experienced this year. My blog traffic literally doubled starting the day after Christmas and maintained, or even surpassed, that elevated level for the entire month. We hit a personal record with one single day generating nearly as much traffic as the entirety of last January, logging an astounding 50,000 pageviews!
This monumental growth wasn’t accidental; it was the culmination of deliberate, strategic efforts throughout the preceding year. Three core factors underpinned this remarkable performance, demonstrating the power of focused content, audience engagement, and efficient resource allocation.
The Pillars of My January Traffic Success
- Strategic Lead Magnet Implementation: A key driver of our January success was the introduction of a new, highly relevant lead magnet. We offered a free, downloadable cookbook featuring our most popular Whole30 recipes in exchange for email subscriptions. This high-quality incentive resonated deeply with our health-conscious audience, resulting in an astonishing gain of over 6,000 new subscribers in January alone. What made this even more impactful was how effortlessly it was executed, largely due to the support of my virtual assistant – a topic we’ll explore in more detail later. This strategy underscores the importance of providing immense value to your audience in exchange for their trust and contact information.
- Investment in Evergreen Content: Throughout 2017, I diligently focused on developing a robust library of Whole30 and paleo recipes. These aren’t just recipes; they are solutions that naturally cater to seasonal health initiatives and sustained healthy eating habits. I view every piece of content as a long-term investment. While a single recipe might not fund a college tuition today, cumulatively, this extensive, high-quality content library forms the bedrock of a sustainable, growing business. January served as a powerful validation of this long-term content strategy, as these foundational recipes consistently attracted new and returning visitors.
- Cultivating a Vibrant Facebook Community: Building an engaged community around your niche is invaluable. During 2017, I actively grew a dedicated Whole30 Support Group on Facebook. While not exclusively branded as “40 Aprons Whole30 Group,” its direct association with my page naturally facilitated more frequent and organic sharing of my recipes. This community provides an essential layer of support for readers embarking on a Whole30 round and acts as a powerful distribution channel for my content. I firmly believe this vibrant, interactive group played a significant role in boosting our January traffic, fostering loyalty and advocacy among our readers.
Visualizing the Traffic Boom
To truly grasp the magnitude of this growth, let’s look at the numbers. The following charts illustrate our impressive traffic trajectory. Note how the tail end of December 2017 already hinted at the upcoming January surge.

A Comprehensive Look at January 2018 Income: Over $16,000!
Our income reporting adheres to a strict guideline: only revenue directly generated by or intrinsically linked to our food blog and online presence is included. For instance, while my blog may indirectly influence other freelance opportunities, only activities where the blog is the primary driver (like freelance food photography) are counted. It’s important to note that during January, I was navigating the early stages of pregnancy, which naturally limited my capacity for taking on extensive additional work beyond maintaining the blog and prioritizing my health. While several new projects were initiated, their invoicing fell outside this reporting period, meaning their impact will be reflected in future reports.
Detailed Income Streams:
- Sponsored Posts: $600. Conscious of the busy January period and my desire to focus on creating truly custom, Whole30-centric content, I strategically took on only one smaller sponsored project. Another project with a regular client was scheduled, but its live date pushed into early February 2018. This approach allowed for quality over quantity, ensuring authentic alignment with our niche.
- Ad Revenue with AdThrive: $13,100.76. With 1,069,834 pageviews, our RPM (revenue per thousand impressions) for January stood at $12.25. This is, as expected, a year-long low. Advertisers typically exhaust their budgets in Q4 for the holiday season and often reset with more conservative spending at the start of the new year. However, our exceptional traffic volume served as a powerful counterbalance. To put it into perspective, had we maintained December’s higher RPM with January’s traffic, our ad revenue would have soared to approximately $19,632 – a significant difference that highlights the impact of seasonal ad spending fluctuations.
- Freelance Food Photography: None. Despite initiating a substantial new food photography project in January, the invoicing cycle meant payment would occur in subsequent weeks. Similarly, a large recipe development project commenced but was not completed for invoicing within this reporting month. These delayed revenues underscore the project-based nature of some freelance work and the importance of understanding cash flow timing.
- Digital Product Sales: $2,098.06. This revenue stream encompasses sales from all digital products available on our site, including our popular food photography presets and the ebook “Improve Your Food Photography Almost Instantly.” The launch of my new cookbook, “The Paleo Instant Pot,” during January significantly contributed to this figure, demonstrating the power of new product releases and diversifying income beyond ads.
- Amazon Affiliate Sales: $1,080.55. This income represents commissions earned when readers purchase products through links on our site. It comes at no additional cost to the buyer but provides us with a small referral fee. This area has been a focus for growth, and while we observed steady progress, the growth trajectory has notably increased since November 2017, reflecting improved optimization and reader engagement with our product recommendations.

The Transformative Power of Hiring a Virtual Assistant
Overcoming Initial Fears and Doubts
The past year leading up to this report was colored by a persistent undercurrent of fear. Fear of failure, of having to return to a traditional office job, of traffic inexplicably plummeting, or even more mundane anxieties like navigating pregnancy cravings. But perhaps the most significant apprehension revolved around the decision to hire an assistant. The thought was daunting: would I be able to sustain her salary? Would it merely eat into my profits? The possibility of having to let her go due to financial strain was a genuine and terrifying concern.
The “Theory to Reality” Shift: A Paradigm for Growth
In theory, the decision seemed logical: hire an assistant to handle the tasks I disliked or that didn’t strictly require my personal attention. This would, in turn, free me to concentrate on high-value activities like content creation, launching new ventures, and steering the overall growth of the business. What truly shocked me, in the best possible way, was that this theoretical ideal materialized exactly as envisioned. It wasn’t just a hopeful scenario; it became a tangible reality that fundamentally reshaped my workflow and accelerated my business’s trajectory.
A Unique Partnership Model: Addressing Common VA Challenges
My journey to finding the right assistant was far from conventional, informed by the experiences of many friends who struggled with virtual assistants in the past. Their frustrations often stemmed from a perceived lack of genuine communication, a sense that the partnership was absent, and a struggle to see tangible results for their investment. Many found it difficult to articulate their needs, keep their assistants updated on industry trends, best practices, or evolving algorithms. I understood these pain points, and while I knew I desperately needed help, these stories fueled my terror.
How I Found My Ideal Assistant and Beyond
Then, a serendipitous conversation with one of my best friends, who was enduring a toxic work environment, sparked an idea. Could I hire her? We had a history of working together from a completely different venture (yes, a burlesque troupe, a lifetime ago!), and I knew that at the very least, she would make work more enjoyable. Yet, my fears persisted: could I genuinely afford to pay her what she deserved, especially given her responsibilities as a sweet daughter’s mother? Despite these anxieties, I decided to extend the offer, at least on a part-time basis.
To my immense relief, she accepted. I was transparent about my inability to offer full-time employment initially, but promised to help her secure other food blogging clients if our partnership flourished. Within weeks, she successfully took on her first additional client, then another, and another. This organic expansion revealed a powerful truth to both of us: we had inadvertently created the perfect food blogger assistant relationship. Her close collaboration with me, combined with my background in brand development and food blog coaching, allowed us to realize that we could offer *this unique, effective model* to other bloggers.
Building a Specialized VA Service for Food Bloggers
This realization led us to develop a specialized virtual assistant service tailored specifically for food bloggers. We understood the unique anxieties of our peers: the fear of a lack of accountability, unclear vision, and the concern that hiring help wouldn’t move the needle or would simply erode profits. To address these, we meticulously hand-picked and rigorously trained a team of brilliant women locally. Our training is continuous, ensuring they remain at the forefront of industry knowledge, trends, and algorithmic changes.
Our assistants work in close consultation with us, analyzing clients’ content performance and metrics. This collaborative approach allows us to consistently evaluate what strategies are succeeding and which are not. It enables us to adapt, pivot, and proactively suggest changes – perhaps a shift in content focus, or an increase in posts on topics that deeply resonate with a client’s audience. It’s more than just delegating a task list; it’s a genuine partnership. Our assistants become intimately familiar with each client’s business and niche, providing invaluable feedback and tailored support that truly drives results.
The Invaluable Impact: Freedom to Innovate and Grow
The freedom my assistant has provided is truly invaluable. By taking on the tasks that don’t require my direct involvement, she has liberated my time to focus on what I love and what I do best: creating, innovating, and growing. This newfound clarity and capacity directly enabled the launch of my food blogging & photography coaching program. She was instrumental in helping me plan the program, keeps me on schedule with my clients, and offers essential feedback from someone who profoundly understands my business’s intricacies. This partnership has not just increased my income; it has amplified my ability to impact the wider food blogging community.
Elevate Your Food Blog: Coaching & Virtual Assistant Services
We are passionately committed to helping other food bloggers achieve their full potential. Our journey has shown us that strategic support and expert guidance can make all the difference. We are currently accepting one-on-one clients for our tailored food blogging and photography coaching program while we continue to fine-tune our offerings. Each program is meticulously designed to be unique, making it an ideal fit for anyone aspiring to build a successful and profitable food blog. Given that my capacity for one-on-one clients will be more limited as my pregnancy progresses, now is an exceptionally exciting time to join our “coaching guinea pigs” (an affectionate term, of course!).
If you’re contemplating bringing a food blog virtual assistant into your business, we encourage you to reach out for a conversation. I’d be delighted to share more about my personal experience, discuss what might work best for your unique needs, and explore if you might be an excellent match for one of our own incredibly talented and specialized assistants. We believe in fostering true partnerships that drive tangible growth and peace of mind.
