😍 Why This Instant Pot Method is Absolutely Essential

In the world of home cooking, few appliances offer the convenience and versatility of the Instant Pot, especially when it comes to tackling frozen ingredients. Our method for cooking frozen chicken breasts stands out for several compelling reasons, making it a favorite in countless kitchens:

  • Effortless, Zero-Thawing Prep: We’ve all experienced that moment of dread: dinnertime approaches, hunger pangs set in, and suddenly, you realize you completely forgot to thaw the chicken. It’s a common culinary crisis! But with the Instant Pot, that worry becomes a thing of the past. You can confidently take those rock-solid frozen chicken breasts directly from your freezer and place them into your Instant Pot with virtually no preparation required, and most importantly, absolutely no defrosting. This saves you precious time and eliminates the need for last-minute meal changes.
  • Remarkably Fast and Consistently Perfect: This technique isn’t just easy; it’s incredibly efficient. Whether you’re cooking frozen chicken breasts or frozen chicken thighs, the Instant Pot guarantees chicken that is perfectly cooked every single time. Thanks to the power of pressure cooking, your chicken emerges tender, moist, and wonderfully juicy, never dry, tough, or chewy. The best part? Achieving this level of perfection takes an astonishingly short 10-15 minutes of active cooking time, allowing you to focus on other tasks or simply relax.
  • The Ultimate Meal Prep Solution: The utility of this Instant Pot method extends far beyond solving dinnertime emergencies. It’s a strategic tool for proactive meal planning. We love using it intentionally for weekly meal prep because it simplifies life immensely. Imagine having a batch of perfectly cooked, ready-to-use chicken on hand for quick lunches or dinners throughout the week. It’s also ideal for any recipe that calls for already-cooked chicken, saving you a significant step. Essentially, anytime you want to bypass the laborious “defrost chicken in the fridge overnight” ritual, your trusty Instant Pot is the answer. From shredded chicken for tacos to diced chicken for salads and casseroles, the possibilities are endless.

Embrace the Instant Pot for its ability to transform frozen chicken into a delicious, versatile protein with minimal effort and maximum flavor. It’s truly a kitchen essential for modern, busy lifestyles.

👩🏼‍🍳 Chef’s Expert Tips for Perfect Instant Pot Chicken

To ensure your Instant Pot frozen chicken breasts turn out flawlessly every time, consider these invaluable tips from our kitchen:

  • Always Use an Instant Pot Trivet: This is a crucial step for achieving the best texture. The trivet ensures that your frozen chicken breasts are elevated and sit above the cooking liquid (broth or water). By doing so, the chicken is primarily steamed rather than boiled, which is key to preventing a rubbery texture and locking in moisture and flavor. A trivet with feet and handles makes removal easier, but a basic trivet with just legs will work perfectly. If you don’t already own one, we highly recommend investing in an Instant Pot trivet – it’s arguably one of the most versatile and frequently used accessories.
  • Mastering Cook Times for Optimal Doneness: The ideal cooking time for frozen chicken breasts can vary slightly based on their size and thickness. While we provide precise timing recommendations in the recipe card below, remember these are guidelines. For peace of mind and to avoid overcooking, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. If you’re uncertain about the exact cooking time, set your timer for a minute or two less than recommended for your chicken’s size. You can always pressure cook the chicken for an additional minute if needed, but unfortunately, you can’t reverse overcooked, dry chicken. Always use an internal meat thermometer to verify doneness, aiming for 160-162°F before resting.
  • Adjusting Liquid for Larger Pressure Cookers: Our Instant Pot frozen chicken breast method has been meticulously tested and perfected using a standard 6-quart Instant Pot. If you happen to be using a larger pressure cooker, such as an 8-quart or 10-quart model, you might need to slightly increase the amount of liquid used. Adding an extra ½ to 1 cup of broth or water helps ensure your Instant Pot can properly come to pressure without triggering a “burn” notice, which is more common in larger pots due to a greater surface area for liquid evaporation.
  • Batch Cooking Without Changing Cook Time: Planning to cook more than 4 chicken breasts? If your Instant Pot is spacious enough to accommodate a larger batch, you’ll be pleased to know that you typically don’t need to adjust the actual pressure cooking time beyond what’s listed for the individual breast size. The only difference you’ll notice is that the Instant Pot will take a little longer to build pressure before the designated cook time begins. This makes batch cooking incredibly efficient and a fantastic way to prepare larger quantities of chicken for extensive meal prep or feeding a crowd.

By following these expert tips, you’ll consistently achieve perfectly cooked, tender, and juicy Instant Pot frozen chicken breasts, making your cooking experience even more rewarding.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Carefully lay the frozen chicken breasts out in a single layer on a large plate, cutting board, or a sheet of aluminum foil. Generously season the tops of the chicken breasts with your chosen poultry seasoning, or simply salt and black pepper. Gently rub the seasoning onto the chicken to ensure even coverage. Flip the chicken breasts over and repeat the seasoning process on the other side, ensuring both sides are well-coated for maximum flavor.
  • Place your Instant Pot trivet inside the inner pot. Pour 1 cup of chicken broth (or water) into the pot. This liquid is essential for the Instant Pot to build pressure and create the steam needed to cook your chicken perfectly. Carefully place the seasoned frozen chicken breasts on the trivet. It’s perfectly fine if the chicken breasts are stacked or overlap slightly on the trivet, as they will cook evenly under pressure.
  • Secure the lid onto your Instant Pot, ensuring it is properly sealed. Rotate the steam release valve to the “Sealing” position. Set your Instant Pot to “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” mode on High Pressure. For 8-ounce chicken breasts, set the cook time to 10 minutes (refer to the Notes section below for adjustments based on chicken breast size). The Instant Pot will then begin to pressurize, which may take 5-10 minutes, before the active cook time countdown begins.
  • Once the cook time is complete, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release its internal pressure for 5 minutes. This “Natural Release” (NR) helps keep the chicken juicy. After 5 minutes, carefully switch the steam release valve to the “Venting” position for a “Quick Release” (QR) to release any remaining pressure. Once the floating valve drops, indicating all pressure has been released, carefully remove the lid, tilting it away from your face to avoid steam.
  • Using an internal meat thermometer, check the temperature of each chicken breast in the thickest part. The internal temperature should register between 160° to 162° Fahrenheit (please see Notes for important details on this temperature). Carefully remove the cooked chicken breasts from the Instant Pot using tongs and transfer them to a clean plate or cutting board. Allow them to rest for 5 minutes. This resting period is crucial for the carryover cooking process, which will bring the internal temperature to a food-safe 165°F while redistributing the juices, ensuring truly moist and tender chicken.
  • After resting, your perfectly cooked Instant Pot frozen chicken breasts are ready to enjoy! You can shred them for tacos, enchiladas, or sandwiches, chop them for salads, wraps, or casseroles, or simply serve them whole with your favorite side dishes. This versatile chicken is also excellent for meal prepping and incorporating into a myriad of other recipes that call for cooked chicken.

  • Chicken Broth Substitutions: While chicken broth adds a layer of savory flavor, feel free to get creative with your cooking liquid. You can easily replace it with water for a neutral flavor, or experiment with pineapple juice, apple juice, vegetable broth, or even a light beer, depending on the desired flavor profile for your finished dish.
  • Seasoning Variations: The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. You can season the chicken with virtually anything you like! Popular choices include a classic all-purpose seasoning blend, traditional poultry seasoning, a robust BBQ dry rub, Creole seasonings like Tony Chachere’s, or simply a generous application of salt and black pepper. Any dry spice blend you enjoy will work wonderfully to infuse flavor into your chicken.
  • Crucial Internal Temperature Guidance: The USDA recommends chicken reach an internal temperature of 165° Fahrenheit for food safety. However, to prevent dry, tough, or chewy chicken breasts, which are often a result of overcooking, we highly recommend you stop the pressure cooking when the internal temperature reaches 160° to 162°F. After removal from the Instant Pot, allow the chicken to rest for 5 minutes. This essential resting period facilitates “carryover cooking,” where the residual heat will continue to cook the chicken, bringing its internal temperature up to the safe 165°F while crucially allowing the juices to redistribute throughout the meat. This ensures your chicken remains exceptionally moist and juicy.

Recommended Cook Times Based on Chicken Breast Size

To achieve perfectly cooked chicken every time, adjust your Instant Pot manual high-pressure cook time according to the average weight of your individual frozen chicken breasts:

  • For 4 chicken breasts, each weighing approximately 6 ounces, set your Instant Pot to Manual High Pressure for 9 minutes.
  • For 4 chicken breasts, each weighing approximately 8 ounces (our standard for this recipe), set your Instant Pot to Manual High Pressure for 10 minutes.
  • For 4 chicken breasts, each weighing between 9-10 ounces, set your Instant Pot to Manual High Pressure for 12 minutes.
  • For 4 chicken breasts, each weighing approximately 12 ounces, set your Instant Pot to Manual High Pressure for 14 minutes.

Remember, these timings are for frozen chicken breasts. Always verify with a meat thermometer.
